NAME: Vheras Warden (WoL)
CANON: Final Fantasy XIV
CANON POINT: Post 5.2 patch (SPOILERS in personality section)
AGE: 37ish?
BACKGROUND: Main link is here, the divergences for Vheras specifically are as follows:
Pre-A Realm Reborn: Born in Ishgard, Vheras was born into the lower family class often found in the Brume. Her mother and father, well aware of their daughter's eventual fate of being dragged into the Thousand Year Dragon War, decided to flee their home in the hopes of raising her in peace. Their first home was the woods within Gridania, finding solace with other Elezen and back in with nature, especially after the chaos of dragons and Dravanians besieging Ishgard at any given moment. However, this did not last long- realizing that Gridanian Elezen were biased and opinionated towards non-natives, her family moved once again, choosing to firmly plant themselves in the seaside docks of Limsa Lominsa.
As a child, Vheras spent her days learning lore from her father, and manners from her mother. In the times not spent with her parents, she was known to wander around the docks and talk with the sailors there, always asking about stories of their adventures. As she grew older, she became known as the "wildling" child who loved pirate stories, and even got into fistfights with other kids over learning said stories for herself. The scar over her left eye is from one fight, and she still doesn't talk about that fight to this day.
Still, she couldn't stay there forever. Since pirates no longer existed thanks to Merlwyb (and she swore to her parents she wouldn't go gallivanting off to the sea never to be seen again), she chose the life of an adventurer when she felt it was time to go off on her own.
A Realm Reborn: Vheras began her story in Ul'dah, choosing at first to be a pugilist and reveling in fighting with weapons that were so similar to her fists. Master Hamon was a... rather unique teacher, the Elezen finding him both humorous and also a man she wished to help. Still, the movements of becoming a Monk were not something she was fond of, eventually trading her cestas for a lance and tossing herself into the lot in the lancer's guild in Gridania.
Most events play forward the same as other Warriors of Light. Vheras chose the Maelstrom as her main company of choice after the defeat of Ifrit, and joined a Free Company around the same time. She became the second Azure Dragoon alongside Estinien Wyrmblood, and fought him to knock some sense into him when he grew jealous of her sharing the title with him. She fought and defeated Gaius, the Ultima Weapon, and kicked Lahabrea out of Thancred's body. She provided help to Yugiri and the Doman refugees, and became a fugitive herself after Teleji Adeleji framed her for the murder of the Sultana.
Heavensward: Most events in Heavensward follow through as they do with other Warriors of Light. However, after the death of Haurchefant and the possession of Estinien, Vheras believed that her ability to protect her friends and those she cared for with her spear was pointless. She buried the weapon by Haurchefant's grave and sought out Fray, throwing herself headlong into training as a Dark Knight, fully knowing when she'd meet Estinien again, it would not be as the Azure Dragoon-
It would be as the personification of the Abyss itself.
Stormblood: All events proceed as normal for the Warrior of Light's story, no diversions. Vheras proceeds through the Dark Knight job quest and meets Myste, eventually learning his true nature.
Shadowbringers: For the most part, Vheras' story isn't different from many others. However, before her travels into the First, she ran into Nashmeira and Ranaa Mhigo, two members of a dancer troupe that was traveling all over Eorzea to provide entertainment. Curious, she took the job crystal and tried practicing it, but hasn't truly pursued it further. As far as meeting Emet-Selch, she does not agree with him (obviously) but also does not hate the Ascian, either. His request at his defeat was one she wholeheartedly agreed to.
As of 5.2, her views on Zodiark and Hydealyn have really been kind of... tossed up into the air. There's a lot she's suddenly realized with the revealing by Elidibus, and she's concerned and wondering just what the hell that sly asshole is up to. It's pretty much a mess? But that's how things are when the world was birthed from two ancient primals duking it out with each other.
PERSONALITY: From start to finish, Vheras is a loud person. Not always in words or rebuttals, but certainly in action and belief. Half the time she spends bantering with her friends or allies, making sure people are in good spirits in order to keep going. The other half? Is spent fighting or protecting in the only way she knows how- by her fists or by her fury.
And by the Twelve, she is not a woman you want to make upset.
Like many other Warriors of Light, her power comes from her connection to Hydealyn, and until recently, Vheras believed that only a select few were ever chosen (or perhaps even tempered) by the elder primal to hear her voice and see visions of others. But with Elidibus debunking this entire notion, it's caused her to become a bit lost in terms of how exactly to view herself as she once did. Where she once saw a headstrong woman who was a hero and a Warrior of Light/Darkness and a bearer of burdens, now that image is muddled with her being the same as... everyone else, pretty much. She simply happened to tap into the Echo compared to others- she was never selected or chosen, she was simply lucky. Vheras is normal, there's nothing special about her. It's been a bit hard to swallow. This, of course, only makes her question her validity at times as a hero.
Another thing to note is how much she conceals behind a grin. Most would think, upon looking at her outside of her armor, that she's an always cheerful person, one who never really stops fighting the good fight. It's not a bad assumption, but it's also not quite right- Vheras keeps a smile on her face because she doesn't quite know what else to do, when it comes to keeping up a good front for her friends. Beneath the smile she usually wears is a tired but concerned fighter who loves everyone and wants them to be safe, but also worries for them quietly in her own way. Too many times she's watched others get hurt or died for protecting her or fighting alongside her, and so the only way she knows how to keep them all together is to smile and bring cheer where she can. It's gotten to be less the more she travels the path that she does, but her own doubt still lingers regardless.
That's not to say that she can't actually be happy- Vheras is often pleased with the smaller things in life, enjoying the companionship of friends and the bright days upon the sea, which is where she feels most at home. Most days, she takes what she can get, trying to find the silver lining in the battles she faces. Of course, her own group of raggedy adventurers make things easier, including the work coming from the Scions at times. Vheras takes comfort in what she can, finding peace and solace in moments such as traveling through Rak'tika Greatwood, or sitting quietly in the gardens of the Ala Mhigan court. If there's beauty and some sense of getting lost in oneself, she'll probably do it, and enjoy herself in the meantime.
But perhaps the biggest part to her personality comes from the death of Haurchefant and the possession of Estinien. It was difficult to watch one of her close friends, a person who trusted her and loved her unconditionally- suddenly be gone. Vheras had to carry on despite that, not really knowing how to process the death of a friend (or many friends from when she was a fugitive, for that matter). And when she finally got the chance to wring out someone's neck and kill them for it? She took it, fully believing in the idea of "if you hurt my friends, I will hurt you." It solidified her protectiveness of those who were still there.
Of course, Estinien was then taken over by Nidhogg, and Vheras' entire world shattered into pieces. In her mind, what was the point of being a dragoon if she couldn't save those she cared for? The Scions were gone, Haurchefant was dead, and now Estinien, her peer and co-Azure Dragoon, was corrupted. What good was having a spear if it never kept danger at bay, and others suffered for it? This thought process was her main motivation in leaving behind the ways of the lance and diving headfirst into the heresy of the dark magic of the Abyss. If she couldn't provide a wall of protection to keep her friends safe now, then she'd become that wall to ensure they're as safe as they can be.
All in all, she's a bundle of sadness wrapped in concern for her friends, but keeps her spirits high and her smile open as much as she can. Because if she doesn't smile, who will?
POWERS/ABILITIES: She's a Dark Knight, for the most part. Due to her previous training as a Dragoon, she also retains knowledge from that class as well (but only to level 60). She's also begun the basic training as a Dancer, but hasn't looked into it much because it's a reminder of her older, happier days- and sometimes those are painful.
Dark Knight abilities are those of a tank- taking the attention of enemies and keeping it focused solely on them so others can deal damage. Her power lies in the darkness known as the Abyss, which holds darkness magic considered heretical to those in Ishgard. She uses these to create a shield for herself or someone else, to draw aggro to herself, or to slowly heal if given time to fight and keep herself alive. It isn't a sustainable amount of healing, but it's enough to keep her going until an actual healer arrives. In a dangerous situation she can actually go past her limits and stay alive for a small amount of time- but if she goes for too long, she will die.
Having been a Dragoon until the end of 3.0 (the vanilla expansion), she's still familiar with working with a spear. Even if she hasn't used it in quite some time, the basics of using it and some of the more special skills still sit firmly in her mind. Causing high damage, calling upon the blood of the dragon, and stunning those if she has a spare moment are her usual go-to. Though she's skilled, it pales in comparison to what she knows as a Dark Knight.
As far as being a Dancer, Vheras has only begun in her journey towards being a support member. She knows the dances and the basics of the class, but hesitates in going further into the job as she believes she shouldn't do something that may make her happy.
Lastly, she has the Echo, an ability which allows her to look into memories of the past in terms of other people. Since the Echo is unique to each person beyond this simple ability, her specific skill is that she gets a nagging feeling if she hears something, but it's not the whole story. It's a tell that she needs to go find more information to fully understand the situation. It doesn't always work, but it helps when it does.
